How to cure thrush and mouth sores

What are canker sores

Canker sores (white spots) are recurrent and painful sores that appear inside the mouth, on the cheeks or edges of the tongue. In general, certain factors, such as stress, poor dental hygiene, yeast infection, food allergies, and nutritional deficiencies are believed to be possible triggers for canker sores. Keep track of when canker sores develop so you can determine ways to avoid getting them.

Causes of canker sores

Know the causes of canker sores in the mouth and what are its most noticeable signs to identify them in time and be able to reverse this oral health problem.

Stress as a cause of thrush

Have you been under stress, or have you just eaten certain foods, like chocolate, strawberries, some nuts, peanut butter, or cinnamon? Citrus fruits and juices, especially oranges, grapefruit and lemon, and tomatoes are often cited as possible causes. Eggs, wheat, pork, oranges, honey, and brewer’s yeast can also cause mouth sores.

Recent dental, prosthetic, or ill-fitting braces can be causes. Do you suffer from allergies, have you had your period or recently took antibiotics? Even a mouth injury from brushing your teeth too hard, eating or chewing hard or sharp food, can cause thrush. These possible causes can give you clues about where the sores came from and how to avoid them.

Food allergies possible cause of thrush

Food allergies are suspected to be a major cause of thrush. Go and do allergy tests in a lab or do it yourself by eliminating suspect foods from your diet for a couple of weeks, then reintroduce one at a time and see which one triggers a gasoline. Cutting out sugar, coffee, and spicy or salty foods can help too.

People with celiac disease – the inability to digest gluten in grains (wheat, oats, rye, and barley) – have a higher incidence of mouth sores. Even without celiac disease, however, a person who is prone to mouth sores may be more sensitive to gluten.

Heartburn canker sores in the stomach

Having too much heartburn has been reported as a possible cause. If your body is too acidic and you have to take antacids regularly.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause canker sores and sores

The nutritional deficiencies are another possible cause. The deficiencies of iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and folate ( folic acid ) may contribute to canker sores. It is suggested to take a good multivitamin and make sure you have a good diet as part of your program to overcome canker sores. Add beta carotene to your diet, this will speed up the healing of the mucous membranes in the mouth.

Call your doctor if canker sores develop after starting medication for more than two weeks, or if non-canker white patches appear in the mouth and do not improve within a week or two. Also see your doctor if you have painless sores in your mouth that won’t go away, as it may be a symptom of a more serious underlying medical condition.

Wellness program to cure thrush and mouth sores

The main cornerstone of your wellness program to treat canker sores and mouth sores will be making dietary modifications. However, you first have to find out what is causing your canker sores. Then a wellness program can be implemented.

Modify lifestyles

  • If canker sores seem to be caused by stress, start a relaxation program.
  • Get a complete check-up by your dentist to eliminate dental problems as the cause.
  • If you suspect that you may have candidaysis (yeast infection) or celiac disease, see your doctor.
  • Begin a diet modification program as follows.

Changes in diet

  1. Check for food allergies. Do yourself a test of blood or do an elimination diet.
  2. Avoid sweets and citrus fruits, refined and processed foods, and coffee and sugar.
  3. Cut down on foods and drinks that create more acidity in the body. Sodas, for example, are very acidic.
  4. Eliminate grain foods if you have determined that this is the cause of your sores.
  5. Eliminate gum, sugar lozenges, and candy.
  6. Consume products that contain acidophilus, such as yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese, or buttermilk.

Supplements

If you are prone to canker sores, take vitamin B complex regularly. Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) seems to be a great help. This prevents the sores from appearing or reduces their duration.

The vitamin C in its various forms has proved effective. The citric acid will kill the bacteria in the sore and promote healing.

Zinc is also beneficial and should be used in combination with vitamin C for best results. Take 500 mg of vitamin C and 220 mg of zinc sulfate (with food, as it can upset an empty stomach) every day until the sores heal. If you get thrush frequently, take these supplements as a preventative measure, but reduce zinc to 15 mg after two weeks of higher doses unless you have permission from your doctor.

Higher doses of zinc can interfere with the absorption of other important minerals, especially copper. Try to suck on zinc lozenges (5-10 mg) four or five times a day. Find a good supplier of quality vitamins.

Remedies to cure thrush and mouth sores

If you get a canker sore, here are some remedies to deactivate it and reduce pain. In general, canker sores disappear in 7-10 days. One of these remedies can help relieve pain and get rid of canker sores sooner.

Folk remedy

Acidofilus. Take 2-4 capsules of acidophilus four times a day with milk (organic). Make sure the tablets contain live organisms. Milk is an activating culture medium for bacilli. This will reduce pain and speed healing. Eating plain yogurt (with acidophilus) with live cultures will add bacteria from the mouth and aid healing by competing with bad bacteria. The yogurt appears to stimulate the immune system.

Aloe vera. Use aloe vera juice as a mouthwash several times a day.

Alum. Alum is a preservative that can be put on canker sores. It will probably burn you a bit for a few minutes, but it will ease the pain and help eliminate the pain quickly. Rinse with water after a few minutes. Repeat once or twice a day, as needed. Alum can be found in the spice section of your grocery store.

Antacids Antacid formulas, such as Mylanta and Milk of Magnesia, used as a mouth rinse for a few minutes, are known to relieve pain and speed healing.

Sodium bicarbonate. This is another very effective traditional remedy for treating canker sores and mouth sores. It can be used as a powder directly on the sore or made into a paste and applied. Use it several times a day. It may sting a bit, but it works by reducing the amount of bacteria in your mouth. Another remedy using baking soda is to mix a teaspoon of baking soda with half a cup of warm water and use as a mouthwash several times a day, especially after meals and before bed. The pain should subside in 24 hours and the pain should go away within three days. Note: Since baking soda contains a high level of sodium, those who need to limit their sodium intake should rinse their mouths thoroughly after use.

Copper sulfate (blue stone). It is an ancient remedy for canker sores dating back to at least the 19th century. It is an astringent, and was also known as “lunar caustic.” It stings on the application, but the canker sores should go away in a day or two. This product can be ordered through chemical supply companies.

DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide). Put it on sores with your fingers or a cotton ball.

Grapefruit seed extract. This extract is a powerful product around antimicrobials and is an excellent disinfectant. Use five or six drops in a glass of water and use as a mouthwash once a day.

Peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used as an effective mouthwash. Swish the contents of the full cap into your mouth twice a day and spit out. Another remedy claims to use three parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is very good at eliminating bacteria. Use it sparingly when necessary unless recommended by your dentist. It can kill too many good bacteria and cause other dental problems.

Lomatium (Lomatium dissectum). It has a long history of use by Native Americans. Research suggests that it may be effective against viruses and is an infection fighter. Use an extract instead of a tincture to avoid a rash all over your body.

Combine equal parts tincture of echinacea, calendula, oats, burdock, and lomatium and take half a teaspoon four to five times a day. This combination of herbs will boost the immune system, soothe inflamed tissues, remove toxins from the body, and kill viruses and bacteria.

Onion. Apply raw onion to the sore.

Papaya. Naphthas can be cleared up by sucking or chewing several papaya tablets a couple of times each day. Fresh papaya fruit would be good too, if you can find it and if you live where there are fresh papaya leaves, chew them.

Plum juice Take two tablespoons of fresh prune juice and use it as a mouthwash for several minutes. For severe pain, soak a cotton ball with prune juice and use it as a compress for a few minutes.

Baking soda and salt. At the first sign of a cold sore, gargle with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt in 1 cup of warm water.

Sorrel. Take a fresh piece of this bitter herb and place it on the sore until it becomes moistened; repeat. Pain should be relieved quickly and healing accelerated. Sorrel has astringent and antiseptic properties and has been used for various skin diseases.

Tea. Try using a tea bag by placing it on the sore. Press on the sore and hold it in that position for as long as you can. The tannic acid in tea is an astringent and will relieve pain and aid healing.

Tea tree oil. This oil is derived from the leaves of the Australian native Melaleuca alternifolia tree, and contains antiseptic compounds that are a very effective skin disinfectant. Depending on the severity, use 5-15% solution daily.

Water salt. Salt water is another resource that you can use. Mix 2 tablespoons of salt in a 6-ounce glass of warm water and use as a mouthwash 3-4 times a day. Both the alum and the salt help the naphtha flow and that helps it heal.

Herbs to cure canker sores and mouth sores

Burdock. Burdock herb (Arctium lappa), taken as tea or in capsules, can effectively treat naphtha and other skin problems such as eczema, boils, acne, herpes and syphilitic sores, styes, carbuncles, and psoriasis. To make the tea, bring 1 quart of water to a boil, reduce to a simmer, add 4 teaspoons of burdock herb. Cover and simmer for 7 minutes, remove from heat and let stand for 2 more hours. Drink a minimum of 2 cups a day on an empty stomach (more if there is a chronic problem). You can also use the tea as a skin wash.

Goldenseal. Make a mouthwash of a quarter teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of goldenseal powder, and 1 cup of warm water. Use several times a day. You can also apply a pinch of powdered goldenseal to the sore.

The mantle of the virgin. Take a drink infused with the virgin’s mantle to soothe the sore.

Myrrh. Another herb to cure canker sores and mouth sores is myrrh (Commiphora Myrrah) helps heal mouth sores. It can be made into a tea or powder can be applied to the sore. To make the tea add 2 sprigs of coarsely chopped parsley, 3 whole spice cloves, 1 teaspoon of powdered myrrh, and 1/4 teaspoon of powdered goldenseal to 1 liter of boiling water.

Stir occasionally while it cools, then strain and use as a mouthwash. This tea will also help with bad breath and a sore throat. To use the powder directly, empty two capsules onto a clean surface, moisten a cotton swab, dip it into the powder, and apply it directly to the sore. Doing this twice a day should eliminate the pain in less than a week. Another mouthwash can be made by using 1 teaspoon of powdered myrrh, goldenseal, and cayenne pepper mixed in one liter of water.

Salvia. (Salvia officinalis) in a tea and used as a mouthwash is effective in healing sores. It has astringent properties. It was used by Native Americans to heal sores and clean the mouth. You can also apply a pinch of sage powder to the sore.
