One in eight people in the US alone, ages 12 and older, has hearing loss in both ears, based on standard hearing tests. There are many reasons why the number of people with hearing loss is so high. According to the NIDCD ( National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders ), noise exposure is the number one reason, and the aging of the population is a close second. Hearing loss is underestimated, misunderstood, and generally ignored as a real problem.
After all, the loss of the ability to hear often results in unfortunate circumstances, aside from hearing loss. Unfortunately, people with hearing problems can become isolated and prone to depression, according to the Better Hearing Institute. Hearing loss has also been linked to cognitive defects that can have a significant adverse effect on one’s personal and professional life.
Here’s another surprise: Among adults over 70 with hearing loss who can benefit from hearing aids, less than 30 percent of them have never used them. Only 16 percent of adults ages 20 to 69 who can benefit from a hearing device have ever used one. Why? Cost is most likely.
Hearing aid costs are in fact prohibitive for many, and many people with hearing problems end up needing to get a device for each ear. Also, hearing aids are not designed to last very long. In most cases, every few years, these devices need to be replaced.
Restore hearing loss with garlic and onion
Before delving into the potential hearing benefits of a simple prescription, it is important to understand that this is not designed as a “definitive cure.” In other words, while this prescription can be really helpful to many, it may still be necessary to see a medical professional for a checkup on your ears. This is particularly true in the case of advanced hearing loss.
The following recipe to help restore hearing loss consists of two ingredients: onion and garlic.
Onion is considered a powerful natural remedy for those suffering from hearing loss. Mechanically, the antioxidant properties of onion are believed to help with sustained ear trauma from explosions and changes in air pressure.
In one study, researchers found that individuals who had suffered cochlear damage and hearing loss from exposure to an explosion recover faster when an onion / water combination is consumed.
Many people who suffer from hearing loss include garlic in their diets. This is less surprising when you consider the myriad of health benefits of garlic. Keep in mind that garlic is used to: suppress colds, lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cognitive defects, and even extend people’s lives.
Garlic is believed to help fight hearing loss by increasing blood flow and restoring the health of the cochlea – the sensory organ responsible for converting sound into nerve impulses. A healthy cochlea is necessary in the transmission of sound impulses to the brain for their conversion.
