Natural remedies for itchy eyes

Or maybe you’re busy organizing your closet and suddenly your eyes start to sting. The allergies sure can ruin a beautiful day. Itchy eyes, along with nasal congestion, sneezing, and coughing are part of the body’s allergic symptoms.

Natural remedies for itchy eyes

When your eyes itch, all you want to do is scratch or rub them. But in reality, this will only aggravate the eye irritation. So, what can be done to get relief from itchy eyes? There are numerous natural home remedies that provide respite from itchy eyes.

1. Cold compress

The first thing to do when itching affects your eyes is to apply a little cold water. Then wrap a few ice cubes or ice packs in a clean cotton towel and place it on your closed lids. This will help you get relief from the irritation.

2. Cucumber slices

This is one of the most common remedies that effectively treat eye irritation and inflammation. Cut two cucumber slices and place them in ice cold water for about 10 minutes, then place these cucumber slices on your closed eyelids. Fresh cucumber helps soothe itchy eyes and reduces pain.

3. Tea bags

The tea contains bioflavonoids that fight viral and bacterial infections. It can also effectively reduce eye inflammation. Place a bag of moist green or black tea on the affected eye for several minutes. Repeat these 5 to 6 times in a day. If your eyes are puffy, moisten the tea bag with cold water, the tannic acid present in the tea will soothe the itchy eyes. A tea solution can be used to wash the eye as well.

4. Water

No matter how many times you’ve heard this before, it needs to be said again. Drink lots of water, if you do, your eyes will stay hydrated, and you can avoid eye irritation.

5. Chilled spoons

Place metal spoons in a glass of cold water and when they cool, put one of them where you feel itchy in the eye. When the spoon starts to heat up, swap it out for another chilled spoon. Keep changing the spoons until the swelling (if any) clears. The cool temperature of the spoon helps constrict the blood vessels, which in turn decreases the swelling and redness of the affected eye.

6. Scottish elm

The American Indians use an herb called Scottish elm for eye inflammation. Use a cotton or gauze pad and soak it in scotch elm water and use it as a compress on closed eyes. This medicinal herb contains astringent properties that help eliminate puffy eyes.

7. Aloe vera juice

The Aloe Vera is a plant of many uses. If you are suffering from an allergic reaction, extract the juice from the leaves of the aloe vera plant and freeze it. Then mix it with cold water and apply it with cotton balls to the affected eye. Aloe vera juice is very soothing to the eye and helps provide relief from irritation.

8. Frozen vegetables

Wrap a bag of frozen vegetables in a towel and place it on the eye. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This will provide relief from eye pain and irritation.

9. Castor oil

Take a sterile dropper and suck 100% pure castor oil into it. Put one drop in the affected eye. Repeat it three times a day. Castor oil will soothe itchy eyes and reduce puffiness and irritation. Most commercial eye drops use castor oil, due to its exceptional anti-inflammatory properties.

10. Sweet potatoes

Place it on the affected eye. This vegetable contains an astringent and helps reduce inflammation. Sweet potatoes can also be used as a poultice and placed on the eye for 15 minutes. Apply this method for three successive nights to heal the inflammation of the eyes.
