Sleep disorders place a great burden on our mental and physical health. Treating them with the use of chemical preparations is not a good idea as they are expensive and can be addictive. However, there are a variety of natural sedatives that you can prepare yourself that promote restful sleep while protecting your body.
Factors such as stress, personal problems, poor diet or physical ailments cause insomnia or restless sleep. Chemical-based sleep aids are a quick fix for many people, but due to their powerful ingredients, they can affect our moods and make us addicted.
Herbal remedies that promote restful sleep are cheaper and gentler on the body. These five natural home sleep sedatives are a natural alternative to sleeping pills and other pharmaceuticals:
1. Valerian: Natural Herbal Sleep Sedatives
Valerian is a proven herbal remedy for insomnia and one of the most effective natural sedatives. Prepared into a tea, the medicinal plant unfolds its effect after approximately one hour. Recipe: Add a teaspoon of valerian to 150 milliliters of hot water and let it steep for ten to 15 minutes.
To receive a noticeable effect, it is important to drink two to three cups of tea a day for several weeks. Alternatively, you can prepare a bath additive with 100 grams of valerian root boiled in two liters of water, which you will pour into the bath water after it has been boiled.
2. Eat grapes to increase your melatonin
The hormone melatonin controls the day-night rhythm of our body and thus ensures regular sleep. Grapes have been shown to be a natural means of providing your body with a lack of these natural sedatives when you have trouble sleeping.
Consuming around 300 grams of grapes at night can have a positive effect on your night’s sleep, in the same way as a glass of red wine. But be careful: alcohol is not a solution for sleep disorders, it can only make them worse. However, there is nothing wrong with relaxing with a single glass of wine in the evening.
3. Almond drink – delicious natural sedatives
You can make a delicious vegan drink using almond butter, vanilla and cinnamon: according to your taste, make a tea or mix a tablespoon of almond butter with a little warm water, or you can also use whole almonds. Add a dash of vanilla and cinnamon to spice up the drink.
If you want to sweeten your drink without sugar, you can add sliced dates to naturally sweeten it. The tryptophan and magnesium in almonds relax the body, and vanilla and cinnamon are known to have a positive effect on sleep disorders. So, all that remains is to enjoy this delicious natural sedative!
4. Herbal cushion – Natural aromatherapy
So-called herbal cushions are forms of aromatherapy due to their aromatic ingredients and they are effective natural sedatives. This concentrated herbal load helps reduce stress and promotes restful sleep.
We explain how to make your own herb cushion: get a fabric bag that you sew yourself or that is already made and fill it with cotton or other non-chemically treated material.
Then add herbs like lavender, mug wort, lemon balm, marjoram, or rose and orange blossoms and sew the open area. The essential oils of the herbs ensure a more relaxed sleep.
5. Banana: home remedy for sleep disorders
Like almonds, bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which stimulates the body to produce the hormones melatonin and serotonin, making them a simple home remedy for sleep disorders. The banana will help you sleep better if you eat it as a snack with a little cinnamon or if you prepare a banana water.
How to make banana water: Boil about a liter of water in a pot and add pieces of peeled banana. Reduce the heat and allow the contents of the pot to simmer for about ten minutes. Then let it cool briefly, add cinnamon and serve in a cup.
